abstract：the determination of the displacement and the wave force acting on a vibrating structure from measured final, average displacement or boundary observations is throroughly investigated. the problems are ill-posed, linear or nonlinear. uniqueness of solution is discussed and numerical results are presented. the investigation may be significant to researchers concerned with wave propagation and control of vibrating structures.
